If you're on a Marketplace plan, it usually renews on its own on January 1. That's convenient, but it also means you can end up paying a new, higher price for a plan that may have changed, without ever comparing it to anything else.
What's changing for 2027
Florida insurers have proposed another round of double-digit rate increases for 2027. These are proposals, and the state still reviews them, so the final numbers will be different from person to person. Final rates are expected before open enrollment starts on November 1. Some carriers are also reported to be leaving the Florida Marketplace, which can mean your plan is discontinued or replaced with a different one.
What you pay depends on your plan, your age, your county, and your income estimate, so the only way to know is to look at your own renewal notice and the new options side by side.
Why auto-renew can cost you
- The price goes up, and so can your share. Your premium help depends on your expected income for 2027, not last year's number. If you don't update it, your help may not match your situation.
- The plan can change. Networks, drug lists, deductibles and copays are reset every year. A plan with the same name may not cover your doctor or prescription the same way.
- A cheaper or better option may exist. A plan from a different carrier, or a private PPO if you're healthy, can come out lower or give you a wider network. You won't know unless you compare.
A 20-minute check before you renew
- Read your renewal notice when it arrives. It shows your new price and any plan changes.
- Update your income estimate for 2027, especially if you're self-employed or your work changed.
- Check your doctors and prescriptions against the plan you're being renewed into.
- Compare at least two other options, including a private PPO if it fits your health.
- Don't wait for the last day. The end date for open enrollment has been reported differently, so check HealthCare.gov for the exact cutoff, and aim to decide well before it.
