What's different for you

Buying insurance as one of Florida contractors

Contractors and tradespeople often work for themselves or lead a small crew. Health insurance is separate from workers' compensation and liability coverage, and it's easy to put off until something happens.

That's why we start with the basics: what you'd pay in a normal year, what you'd pay in a bad one, and whether your doctors are covered.

1099 subs and sole proprietors

You're likely buying an individual plan. Marketplace premium help depends on income; private plans don't, but ask health questions.

Owners with a few employees

Group plans generally need at least one employee who isn't the owner or the owner's spouse. We can check what applies to you.

Seasonal or project-based income

Pick a plan you can keep through a slow month, and keep your income estimate current if projects change.

Two main options

Marketplace or private PPO?

Most people working for themselves choose between two kinds of plans. They work differently, and we compare both with your real numbers.

ACA Marketplace plans

Accept everyone regardless of health history, cover a standard set of benefits, and can come with premium help that depends on your income.

Private PPO plans

Often have broader doctor networks and some options with no deductible. They ask health questions and can limit or exclude coverage. Some aren't ACA-compliant, so we go through exactly what's covered.

Many self-employed people can deduct health insurance premiums on their taxes. Ask your tax professional how that applies to you.

Questions

Common questions

Does workers' comp cover my health insurance?

No. Workers' compensation covers injuries on the job and is a separate coverage. This page is about health insurance.

Can I get a group plan for my crew?

Group plans generally require at least one employee who isn't the owner or the owner's spouse, and carriers set participation rules. We can look at what fits your business.

What if my income changes mid-year?

You can update your income estimate on a Marketplace account at any time. Doing it early helps you avoid a surprise at tax time.
